There are many conflicts around the world and most seemed to be resolved with guns and bullets. This violent form of resolution rarely leads to real peace but often involves resentment, distrust and great loss of life. Just look at Syria, 5,000 people killed in the uprising so far and many more to follow before people lay down their weapons.
Abram resolved his conflict with his nephew Lot by taking the initiative and offering to serve, putting peace ahead of his own personal desires. For this show of trust, the Lord promised Abram more descendants that he would be able to count. Abram listened to God. He loved his nephew and was prepared to give him what he wanted in order to maintain peace between them.
Love of God and trust in the Lord are all we need for salvation and all who listen to Him will live in peace. Reject that advice and the end result is death.
