Abraham often tried to deceive people to protect himself or his family, but as always, God forgave him after testing him. In one episode, Abraham was about to sacrifice his son in obedience to God when the angel of the Lord intervened and a ram was provided for the sacrificial offering.

I often wonder what went through Isaac’s mind during this event. He set off with his father, two servants and a donkey and travelled for three days. At the appointed place, a mountain top, Abraham bound Isaac and placed him on the wood upon the altar. Whilst Abraham was obeying God, there is no recorded dialogue between those who participated in this journey and nothing said about Isaac’s reaction or that of the servants. All that is mentioned when Isaac queries what they will use for the sacrifice is Abraham’s response that God will provide.

Did Isaac hear the angel as Abraham raised the knife? We’ll never know! And exactly what was said between them after their time of worship one can only imagine.

What we do know is that God was testing Abraham’s faith and building on it – for this episode must have convinced Abraham and Isaac too for that matter, that if we fear the Lord, he will protect us.

We will be protected from the wolves, the false prophets and recognise the true prophets by their faithful actions. We will be known by the fruits of our work which will be evidence of our faith on God, whom we praise for all the wonders he has provided, for his faithfulness to us even though we fall many times along the way.
