On 28th November 1981, Our Blessed Lady appeared to a girl at school in Kibeho, Rwanda. There followed a series of visions to this young lady and in time, several other girls. In 1982, the visionaries received a prophesy about a forthcoming genocide and in 1983 they were given a vision of a river of blood.
In 1990 civil war broke out and in 1994, the well documented genocide occurred and with a million souls brutally murdered, including many victims from Kibeho.
The accounts of the visionaries, three of which have been approved by the Catholic Church are retold by a survivor of the massacre, Immaculée Ilibagiza, as is the story of Segatashya, an illiterate pagan boy.
The purpose of this post is not to recount those stories, but to repeat some of the messages that Our Lady of Kibeho presented to the visionaries. Remember, they were given 10 years before disaster struck that country. Today, we see tension between Russia, Europe and the USA with Ukraine suggesting they are on the brink of World War III.
First, Mary reminded us of who she was saying, ‘I am the Mother of the Word’. Scripture states, ‘The Word was made flesh and dwelt among us.’ (John 1:14).
Next Mary pleaded, ‘I need your prayers to save the world.’
She asked, ‘Why are you turning away from God and rushing towards the fire?’, and added ‘… the world is running towards its perdition.’
This is as true for the world today as it was in the 1980s. Mary, Our Mother reminded us, ‘Do not work for things of this world since they do not belong to you and you will not be here forever. You are only temporary travellers.’
‘God loves you all, and only God’s love is true and everlasting. Satan wants to destroy your souls. You must do everything in your power to resist the temptations he places in front of you, for they will only lead to darkness.’
In Rwanda, they failed to listen. Here we still have the chance to use one of the most powerful tools in the armoury of the Christian – the Holy Rosary.
In the coming days, I will add a couple of versions of the Holy Rosary that we can pray in order to avert the current threats to world peace and to save souls.
Let us not fail to listen to Our lady of the Word.
