‘You shall have no other gods before Me’ Exodus 20:3.

The first commandment expressly forbids honouring or worshiping gods other than the Lord who has revealed himself to the people (cf. CCC 2110). Yet in the 20th and 21st century’s man has done just that by putting celebrities on a pedestal and for all intents and purposes worshipping them.

Thousands worship debauched pop stars, some cavorting on stage; others spend large sums of money following football teams full of overpaid players; there is corruption is many sports; TV celebrities are wooed and even our politicians are starry eyed when mixing with these new gods. The Royal family is not exempt, many, not just the paparazzi followed Diana Princess of Wales, buying fashions to match hers and following her untimely departure, a new goddess has been proffered to the people, the Duchess of Cambridge.

Now we start to see that they were imperfect human beings, like the rest of us. Just as Moses full of anger came down and destroyed the golden calf (Exodus 32:20), so these celebrity idols are beginning to fall, one by one. Jimmy Savile may have escaped earthly justice, but he cannot escape the anger of the Lord. Entertainers, newspaper editors, publicists, radio presenters and MPs have and will continue to fall from grace as their misdeeds unfold in the public arena.

As Christians, we should resist the urge to put these people above God. It is fine to enjoy sport or go to a concert, so long as Jesus comes first.

Holy, holy, holy Lord God of hosts

Heaven and earth are full of Your glory

Hosanna in the Highest!
