The title of this short book is taken from the encyclical Pacem in Terris (Peace on Earth), issued by Pope Saint John XXIII on Holy Thursday, April 11, 1963. In it he said,

“Every believer in this world of ours must be a spark of light, a centre of love, a vivifying leaven amidst his fellow men. And he will be this all the more perfectly, the more closely he lives in communion with God in the intimacy of his own soul.”

It was of course this pope who, prompted by the Holy Spirit, instigated the Second Vatican Council, with two goals in mind: Renewal and Christian Unity. Pope Saint John XXIII hoped and prayed:

“Renew Your wonders in this our day, as by a new Pentecost. Grant to Your Church that, being of one mind and steadfast in prayer with Mary, the Mother of Jesus, and following the lead of blessed Peter, it may advance the reign of our Divine Saviour, the reign of truth and justice, the reign of love and peace. Amen.”
