We seem to be living in tumultuous times both at home and abroad where the political situation appears unstable, peace a distant dream and any sense of normality is hidden in a smog. Social, television and print media seem to be full of bad news, turmoil and in some instances, pure hatred. Many feel disenfranchised and at a loss, the young, the old, the vulnerable and even people who do not fall into any of these categories.
Yet today we celebrate the Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, the latest in a long list of celebrations which have included Easter, the Ascension and Pentecost, all of which should bring us great joy.
Countless scholars and theologians have pondered the Holy Trinity, three persons, Father, Son and Holy Spirit; one God. But it is a mystery, a mystery of deep love. God is love and the Holy trinity is the embodiment of that love, a love that God not only wants to share with us but lives in eternal hope that we will share that love with each other.
So when all seems lost, when the world appears to be a strange place, let us take every opportunity to love one another, a smile, a comforting word, a helping hand, a prayer. Then just maybe, the smog will lift and we will once again see the beauty of creation in the world around us and in each other.
